Adresse:   10 Omo Osagie street, Ikoyi, Lagos
Description:

SOTO Gallery presents What the Surface Refuses to Hide: Narratives in Sgraffito, a duo exhibition featuring Toju Clarke and Adeoti Azeez Afeez.

Bringing together two distinct contemporary practices, the exhibition explores sgraffito as a method of uncovering. Through scratching, carving, abrasion, and incision, both artists engage the surface as a site of memory, tension, and disclosure.

Working through layered painted surfaces, @clarketoju examines memory as terrain shaped by lived experience, aspiration, intimacy, and psychological endurance. In clay, @d.clay.guy draws from ancestry, family lineage, and Yoruba visual histories, transforming ceramic surfaces into records of cultural memory.

At its core, What the Surface Refuses to Hide is an exhibition about revelation: the stories embedded within surfaces, the histories carried through material, and the quiet insistence of memory refusing disappearance.
